Do I Need Nurses PI Insurance?

It is a legal requirement for all nurses working outside of the NHS to carry professional indemnity insurance. Those working under a contract of employment for a private healthcare organisation should be covered directly by their employer.

However, if you are self-employed, or operating under you own limited company, you will be obligated to maintain your own PI Insurance as part of your ongoing NMC Registration. Many nursing agencies will require nurses engaged as agency workers to arrange their own cover. Our specialist scheme can provide cover for any nurses working outside of the NHS.

Will I Be Covered by my RCN Union Membership?

Will I Be Covered by my RCN Union Membership?

The Royal College of Nurses (RCN) has traditionally provided discretional indemnity cover as part of their membership package. Whether can claim will be met is entirely at the discretion of the RCN Council.
From July 2014, the RCN further reduced the scope of their indemnity scheme – nurses working under a contract of employment (including umbrella agency arrangements), or working under a limited company with more than one director, will no longer be offered any protection via the RCN scheme. Certain other clinic procedures (such as cosmetic work) is also excluded. The safest option is always to arrange your own underwritten policy where the insurer has understood the work you do and provided bespoke cover for your needs.
