What is Paramedic Professional Indemnity?

Paramedic Professional Indemnity Insurance provides medical defence indemnity protection for professional negligence claims, or allegations of malpractice, received against a paramedic in the course of their professional duties.

Do I need Paramedic Indemnity Cover?

UK Government introduced legislation on 1st April 2015 making it a legal requirement for Paramedics registered to the Health & Care Professions Council (hcpc), to have appropriate professional indemnity (malpractice cover) in place and this now forms part of the hcpc application and renewal process.

If you are working for an agency, it is highly likely you will need to purchase your own cover to meet your legal obligations, but you should check your own individual contract carefully.

Will I be covered by my employer?
If you are working for a healthcare provider under a contract of employment, then they have a duty to arrange suitable cover, but we would still suggest you obtain a copy of this document and have this provided in writing. If you are engaged as a self-employed contractor, you should check your engagement letter carefully as it is highly likely cover will not apply and you need to purchase your own indemnity protection.
