What does Event Insurance cover?
Your Event Insurance package will typically revolve around two core areas of cover:
1. Event Public Liability Insurance – which will protect you against claims from attendees or members of the public following injury or damage to their property as a result of the actions of you or a member of the event team. For example, a stall collapses at a fete and lands on an attendee’s foot, causing a fracture.
2. Event Cancellation Insurance – Cancellations happen for a variety of unforeseen reasons including adverse weather conditions, non-attendance of key speakers or performers, and traffic incidents. Without adequate cancellation insurance cover, your business or charity will be left without financial protection.
In addition to Public Liability and Cancellation cover, our event insurance policies can be extended to include other risks such as physical items of property (loss or damage cover to stalls or equipment), money and personal accident cover.
Do you need Public Liability Insurance for events?
Public Liability insurance is one of the most recommended forms of cover for any event planner arranging activities where members of the general public will be present. When it comes to events insurance, this is even more relevant as sometimes up to several thousand people will be gathered in one place. Whether it’s a music festival, business convention or wedding fair, you will need appropriate cover for your worst-case scenario.
What’s more, the venue owner will often ask for proof of public liability insurance with a requirement for a minimum level of indemnity before the event. Many private venues with ask for a minimum indemnity limit of £5million and, as the event organiser, it is your responsibility to ensure this is arranged in advance of the event.
If you do not have the correct cover, and an accident occurs, you could be held liable and have to pay compensation and legal fees out of your own pocket for a large claim should anyone decide to take legal action.
Public Liability can provide peace of mind for event organisers and venue owners that they will be protected from a significant financial loss in the event of an accident. Similarly, public liability ensures that, in the rare case of a disaster, the victims can be sufficiently compensated in ways your organisation could not afford.
What does Event Public Liability Cover?
Typically, public liability covers you in the event of third-party personal injury, i.e. slips, trips and falls. It also applies to property damage and even death.
While extensive risk management can prevent most significant incidents, you can’t control everything, and compensation claims can catch you off guard.
Employers Liability Cover
If you are employing any staff at your event, you will also be required to purchase Employers Liability cover. Employers Liability cover is a legal requirement for people you directly hire or recruit to help who are not immediate family members.
This will protect you against claims from employees or volunteers who may suffer injury or illness as a result of working at the event for which they hold you responsible. For example – a volunteer trips over a loose power cable and breaks their arm.
Event Insurance Claims Example
Following a car accident, the motorway providing access to a conference venue is closed.
The law firm’s annual conference has to be abandoned, leading to travel, hotel and other expenses being incurred—total claim cost c£25k.
How much is Public Liability for events?
The amount of public liability cover you will need for a single event will depend on the perceived risk.
For example, if you are hosting a music festival where you are serving alcohol to over a thousand people, there is a higher risk factor than a book fair run by a small business with less than one-hundred guests
