What is Nurses Professional Liability and Indemnity Insurance?

Nurses Professional Liability Insurance provides medical defence indemnity for professional negligence claims, or allegations of malpractice, received against a nurse in the course of their professional duties.

Should a patient seek compensation for injury or illness as a result of the care you have provided, professional nursing indemnity insurance will provide cover for defence costs and any compensation awards up to the limit of indemnity.

Is Professional Indemnity Insurance for Nurses required by law?

It is a legal requirement for all nurses working outside of the NHS to carry nursing indemnity insurance. If you work for the NHS, you will already have an appropriate indemnity arrangement. The NHS insures its employees for work carried out on its behalf. This means that you will be covered if a claim is made against you in an NHS role. Those working under a contract of employment for a private healthcare organisation (for example, nursing home or general practice) it is likely that your employer will have an appropriate indemnity arrangement for you.

If you have a combination of self-employed and employed work or work for more than one employer, you must have an appropriate indemnity arrangement in place for each area of your practice.

However, if you are self-employed, or operating under your own limited company, you will be obligated to maintain your own nurse Insurance as part of your ongoing NMC Registration. You will be asked to confirm you have the appropriate nurse indemnity insurance in place as part of your revalidation process. Many nursing agencies will require nurses engaged as agency workers to arrange their own cover. Our specialist scheme can provide professional nurse indemnity cover for any nurses working outside of the NHS.

Asked Nurse Indemnity Insurance

We have prepared a list of the questions we are regularly asked by Customers before and after buying a policy.

If you need further help we are always available.

If you work in certain professions, regulatory bodies might require that your business has professional indemnity insurance. In the case of the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC), you MUST have indemnity cover in place when you practice as a nurse, midwife or nursing associate. More information about the specific requirements and revalidation can be found on the NMC Website.

Insync is one of the largest insurance brokers serving the cosmetic and aesthetics sector and we have specialist schemes for Aesthetic Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Prescribers. Cover can include a wide variety of treatments such as anti-wrinkle injectables, dermal fillers and fat dissolving. Aesthetic Insurance premiums start from as little as £325.00, contact one of our specialist malpractice and aesthetics team today for a quotation on 01200 309516.

The NMC doesn’t stipulate a minimum level of professional indemnity cover for nurses looking to revalidate their cover and our best advice is always to purchase the highest level of protection you can afford.

Your indemnity limit will represent the maximum amount which your insurer will pay out in awards and defence costs for an individual claim AND in the aggregate during your annual period of insurance.

Multiple claims can quickly eat into a low limit of cover and leave you personally exposed. Limits start from £1m per annum, then rise to £2m and £5m, with higher limits available on request.
