Health Insurance for the Self-Employed

The NHS is under ever increasing pressures on staffing and resources, seeing ever increasing wait times for diagnosis, consultation and treatment.

Currently only 39% of GP Appointments are carried out on the same day and 34% of requests for GP appointments are not delivered within 7 days. Seeing a GP however is only the start of what can be a very lengthy process. It is quite probable for patients to be waiting at each stage; for a GP Appointment, for a diagnosis appointment, then for treatment.

As of the end of December 2022, there were a total of 1.54 million NHS patients waiting for diagnostic tests and procedures and a a further 5.99 million patients waiting over 18 weeks for a consultant referral for treatment.

Clearly, these lengthy delays can pose not only a threat to your health but also to your business and livelihood, with you potentially not able to work or run your business for weeks or even months. That’s where private health insurance comes in. Pre-Existing Conditions

Our self-employed private medical plans don’t cover the diagnosis or treatment cost of any health condition or problem that you, or anyone else covered under your plan, has had symptoms of in the last three years; this is commonly known as pre-existing conditions.

A pre-existing condition is any disease, illness or injury where you (or anyone else covered under your plan):

  • Has received medication. advice, or treatment in the three years before the start of cover, or
  • Has experienced symptoms in the three years before the start of cover, whether or not the condition was medically diagnosed.

Cancer Cover

All our self-employed health insurance plans cover full diagnosis coverage.  The key to any cancer is to detect it early and avoid any potential diagnostic delays for scans or tests.  Our Solo and Solo Plus Plans do not include cover for the private treatment of cancer; however, once a formal diagnosis has been made, treatment can be picked up immediately via the NHS. We are also able to offer full Private Medical Insurance which can have cancer treatment added as an optional extra.

Transparent Pricing and Cover

Our easy-to-understand private medical plans are available to self-employed business owners and directors aged from 16 to 59 with two simple options:

Insync’s Health Insurance plans are provided by AXA Health in conjunction with Equipsme.  You can add your partner or spouse for the same monthly premium. Also, add up to 6 children aged up to 25 for 50% of the monthly cost.

Common FAQ’s

Self-employed health insurance is specialist private medical insurance for business owners and/or sole directors. The cover provides access to private health diagnosis and/or treatment for medical conditions covered by the policy.

According to the British Medical Association (BMA) and data from NHS England, current waiting lists for consultant-led elective care exceed 7 million people (as at the end of November 2022).  Self-employed are more exposed than most to the impact of these delays, whereby ill health can directly impact your ability to earn a living.  Self-employed health insurance provides peace of mind that instant diagnosis and access to private treatment is available, avoiding months (or even years!) on the NHS waiting list.

Insync health insurance policies for self-employed come in two key forms.  Some policyholders opt to protect diagnosis cover only, allowing instant access to private scans and tests to ascertain what’s wrong.  The most popular policy extends to cover private medical treatment following diagnosis via AXA Health’s approved network of private medical centres and hospitals.  Please refer to the policy summary and wording for full details of the cover and treatments.

  1. Pre-existing conditions are excluded; a pre-existing condition is defined as any disease, illness or injury that a policyholder or member:
    • have received medication, advice or treatment for in the three years before the start of cover, or
    • have experienced symptoms in the three years before the start of the policy coverage; whether or not the condition was diagnosed
  2. Treatment of cancer cover is excluded, however, cancer is covered under the diagnosis section of the policy, allowing speedy consultation, scans and testing, allowing treatment to progress via the NHS.
  3. Pregnancy and childbirth are generally excluded, although some medical conditions which can occur during pregnancy may be covered
  4. Treatment for “Chronic Conditions” are excluded.  These are typically long-term recurrent, and ongoing conditions. An example would be diabetes, although diagnosis could be covered in the usual manner.
  5. Treatment received outside the UK is excluded.
  6. Mental Health Conditions are excluded, although the cover is provided for stress support and associated counselling.

The cover is provided via two-tier options, cover starts from just £30 per month or £48 per month including treatment cover. Full details of cover and premiums will be provided before you accept your policy.

The cover is available for self-employed business owners and directors aged from 16 to 59 years of age.  Cover will continue beyond age 60 at renewal as required without any additional premium increase. In addition to the policyholder, you may add your partner/spouse for the same monthly premium and up to 6 children (aged 25 and under) with a 50% premium reduction.

The initial policy will last for 12 months and your monthly premium is fixed for this period.

The only excess which applies is a £150 excess under the tier two, solo plus, policy in respect of diagnosis and/or treatment cover.  The excess is only applied once during the policy period, so the maximum excess you will pay is £150, regardless of the number of claims.

No upper treatment limit is applied to the policy, giving your peace of mind that treatments covered by the policy will continue to be paid via AXA Health.

All Insync health insurance plans for business customers are provided in conjunction with Equipsme and AXA Health Insurance

All policies are paid monthly via direct debit with no extra charge.  There is currently no option to pay annually or via other payment methods.
